As 2010 comes to a close and we stride out into 2011 and beyond, how will we create the life we truly desire?  Many people make self-improvement resolutions this time of year only to find they abandon them soon thereafter; but why?  I believe people abandon their resolutions because they're not living true to themselves but instead living in a form of self-deception.

Let's explore 11 steps to help you Live True in 2011 based on the various meanings and definitions of "resolution."

1. Discover Your Passions: In a general sense of the word, a resolution means to act with firm determination.  The first step in living true is to firmly determine what you are truly passionate about and begin to create a life based on those passions.

2. Establish Your Values: Resolution also means the state or quality of being resolute.  What do you actually value?  Honesty?  Integrity?  Humility?  To Live True, establish at least five of your core values and resolutely live according to those values.

3. Focus Your Vision: Resolution can be defined as having a firmness of purpose.  Now that you've discovered your passions and established your values, ask yourself, "What is my purpose in this life?"  Focus on the vision you see forming in your mind to live a life of purpose.  Dream Big.

4. Define Your Roles: In Physics & Chemistry, a resolution is the act or process of separating or reducing something into its constituent parts.  Separate and define each of your current life roles (Caregiver?  Student?  Friend?  etc.).  Remember to include a role for yourself (personal development, health and wellness, etc.)

5. Set Your Goals: Have you noticed the smaller word within the word "resolution" is "solution"?  A resolution is an explanation, as of a problem or puzzle; a solution.  Use goal setting as a way to puzzle together your passions, values, vision, and roles into a workable solution.  Set goals for each role, including self; and remember, your goals need to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely).

6. Plan Your Tasks:  In Optics, resolution is defined as the fineness of detail that can be distinguished in an image.  Plan your tasks based on the goals you've established in each of your roles.  Break down each of your goals into smaller, doable steps; the more detail you give your tasks, the better your chance for success in accomplishing them.

7. Manage Your Time, In Music, resolution is the process in harmony whereby a dissonant note or chord is followed by a consonant one. Your lifetime is like a musical composition and each moment is like a unique chord.  Similar to music, time must be organized and managed in order to be effective.  We all have only 24 hours, or three octaves (from a Latin root meaning "eight"), in our days.  There are an infinite number of ways to compose the music of your days within those three octaves of hours.  Accept that there will be times of dissonance and consonance; but if you manage your octaves well overall, you'll resolve your lifetime in harmony.

8. Honor Your Rest, In Medicine, resolution is the subsiding or return from a pathological to a normal condition. If you're like most people I know, you don't get enough rest; fatigue creates dis-ease.  Make an honest evaluation of how much rest you truly need to move from a pathological to a normal condition, and then allow yourself to honor your body and your rest.

9. Review Your Results: Resolution is the ability of a microscope, telescope, or other optical instrument to produce separate images of closely placed objects.  After using the above system for a period of time, review your actual results.  Repeat this process again and again, each time adjusting to a higher-powered lens whereby you refocus and recenter on the continuing results you want to see achieved.

10. Keep First Things First: In Law, a resolution is a formal expression of opinion or intention made by a legislative body or organization; a court decision. We are constantly barraged with many "good" things from which to choose, but the ability to stay centered on the "best" things means being willing to express your opinion and say "no" to the "good" in order to say "yes" to the "best."  Diplomacy is paramount here; learn to communicate with assertion, sincerity, and kindness to "please the court."

11. Simplify, Simplify, Simplify.  My favorite quote is "I wouldn't give a fig for the simplicity on this side of complexity; I would give my right arm for the simplicity on the far side of complexity" attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841-1935). What does this quote mean to me?  It means continuing to resolve to practice all the above-stated steps until you create a simple life of profound meaning; the life you truly desire.

It takes a lifetime of resolve, determination, perseverance, tenacity; strength, and fortitude to live in simplicity on the far side of complexity.  The only way to reach that far side is to never give up, so keep at it.

My hope is that by following these 11 steps, you'll be well on your way to living the life you truly desire; a life where you can honestly say you Live True.
